How to Care for Your Bag Charms
A well-made bag charm should last for years, and a few small habits make the difference between one that still looks new and one that looks tired after a season. None of this takes more than a minute.
Wipe it down weekly
Bag charms live in the open air and pick up dust, oils, and the occasional splash of coffee. Once a week, wipe your charm with a soft, slightly damp cloth and dry it immediately. That is genuinely most of the maintenance any charm needs.
Keep metals dry
Moisture is the enemy of bright metal. If your charm gets caught in the rain, dry it as soon as you can. For brass that has started to darken, a dedicated metal polish cloth restores the shine in seconds — but only polish if you want it bright; some people love the patina.
Store charms flat and separate
The most common damage is not wear, it is tangling. When you swap a charm off your bag:
- Undo the clasp fully before pulling it free — never yank it.
- Lay tassels and chains flat rather than bunching them.
- Store each charm in its own small pouch or compartment so pieces do not scratch each other.
Ninety percent of charm damage happens in a drawer, not on a bag.
Protect pearls and enamel
- Pearls: keep them away from perfume, lotion, and hairspray. Apply those first, then clip the charm on last.
- Enamel: avoid hard knocks against concrete or stone. A soft pouch during travel is plenty.
Give tassels a reset
Suede and ribbon tassels can flatten over time. Hold the tassel by the cap and gently comb the strands straight with your fingers, then let it hang overnight. It will fall back into shape.
Treat your charms a little like jewelry — dry, separate, and handled gently — and they will keep bringing color and luck to your bag for a very long time.
